Afghan War News > Afghan vs. Afghani

The culture and people of Afghanistan can be quite perplexing to military personnel on their first tour. One of the first lessons learned (one hopes) is the use of the proper terminology when referring to the people of Afghanistan. Many newcomers use the term "Afghani" when referring to a person from Afghanistan. However, the correct term is "Afghan". An "Afghani" is the currency of Afghanistan.

Read more on this problem of proper terminology in a news report about an intel officer who wants to educate personnel on the correct use of "Afghani". See "Intel Officer Plans to Kill Next Soldier Who Uses 'Afghani' Incorrectly, Duffel Blog, March 18, 2014.
